US Armed Forces Executes Lethal Attack in Pacific, Leading to 4 Deaths
As stated by a senior military official, the US armed forces carried out a lethal strike on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, killing four individuals.
“A US joint task force conducted a deadly attack on a vessel linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence verified the vessel was traveling along a established narco-trafficking route and was involved in illicit drug transport. A total of four male drug traffickers were killed, and no US military forces were harmed.”
Context and Recent Actions
The statement follows a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, vowing to escalate the military buildup.
Only on the previous day, the Pentagon stated it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Defends Actions Amid Scrutiny
The administration has faced increasing pressure to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. But, officials have refused to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a successful operation, arguing it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the bounds of lawful warfare.
While the administration has stated the operation is about stopping drugs headed to the US, remarks from a top official seemed to confirm a wider geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff said the president “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This suggests the series of strikes may be part of a push to oust Venezuela's current government.
