The Reze Arc Movie Tops American Box Office in Debut Weekend
Can Sony claim to have done it again? Coming after the triumph of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed over $600 million worldwide, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has surpassed the $100M threshold worldwide, hitting a international earnings of $108M this weekend. This feature outperformed the thriller Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its sophomore frame in theaters, as well as Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).
Notable Domestic and Global Performance
The work of Tatsuya Yoshihara, the movie is a direct continuation of Chainsaw Man’s first season. Specialist agency a leading anime marketing group had earlier commented, comparing the film’s projected performance to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34M in the North America in the year 2022 and debuted with a comparable $18M domestically. This movie's opening frame matches that standard, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar international sum is now positioned just behind that movie's $166.6 million total earnings. Although it’s unlikely the Reze Arc movie will match the box office of smash success the enormous hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a major victory for the studio.
Fan Engagement Campaigns Boost Performance
Sony and its subsidiary Crunchyroll have skillfully used fan engagement to drive their supremacy at the animated movie market. The Reze Arc promotional efforts began at the Anime Expo in LA in July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, special events, and Pochita-themed pictures, followed by a major presence at the New York Comic Con including behind-the-scenes footage, lotteries for fans, and further MAPPA discussions. There was even an special preview for fans for the public and popular figures too after the final day of the gathering.
Future Prospects
This year marks a significant period for animated films, and for the studio, which has one more anime film releasing in the coming months in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
