The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
