The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman containing several human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct personas, each with unique fears and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though other scenes show the protagonist navigating a desolate church.
A World of Personal Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to each person."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous blooms where their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one remaining could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
