The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
At least 16 lives perished and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.
The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the individuals who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Known as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She recounted the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still under care, with five in serious condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
