A confidential source has disclosed an official investigation that British authorities abandoned confidential technology permitting the Taliban to identify Afghans who worked with allied troops.

Data Breach Puts Numerous at Risk

The source, identified as Person A, testified that people concerned by the security lapse were instructed to change residences and alter their phone numbers to avoid detection from militant forces.

MPs are investigating the Conservative government's handling of a serious leak of personal details affecting nearly 19,000 Afghans who had asked to move to Britain to escape militant rule.

Data Disclosure Happened

An electronic document including private information, including identities, phone numbers and occasionally family information, was mistakenly released by a staff member employed at British military command in February 2022.

The leak became known in late 2023, when identities of multiple applicants who had requested to move to Britain appeared on social media.

“There seems to be this misconception that Afghan rulers do not have the same sort of facilities that we have,” she told MPs.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they possess it. Should they obtain a contact number, they can trace you down to within metres. That is what the unit achieved.”

Under inquiry about regarding if authorities had access to advanced decryption, Person A confirmed: “They've got everything.”

Consequences of the Information Leak

Preliminary research submitted to the inquiry suggested that approximately fifty kin and associates of Afghans affected by the breach had been killed.

A superinjunction concerning the breach was put in force in last year and blocked all details regarding the matter from being made public until July 2025.

Security Recommendations

Due to legal constraints, the source and the non-governmental organization she was working with informed Afghan families they were assisting that they had “concerns that certain devices had been compromised”.

“We recommended that they moved when possible and altered their phone numbers. That constituted the crucial data that, if authorities obtained these details, would lead to identification and capture,” Person A explained.

Challenged Assessments

The source contested that internal investigation performed by a retired civil servant had been incorrect to state that the possession of the dataset by the Taliban was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.

“The important fact is that these individuals are in hiding from militant forces; they are in hiding. All concerns relate to past work history.”

She detailed terrible abuse endured by affected individuals, including electrocution, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.

“We have had young kids who have had bones crushed to pressure households to say where someone is,” the whistleblower revealed.
