Reece Walsh Shines as Dominant The Kangaroos Defeat The Hosts Aside in Opening Ashes Match
The home side's offensive weaknesses were exposed and punished by a clinical Australian side as the visitors secured a surprisingly comfortable victory in the first match of the Ashes.
Shaun Wane’s side had talked at length about their drive going into the first Ashes for 22 years, and they were definitely full of endeavour at Wembley. However, in the key instances, it was the world champions who showed more composure in front of a record attendance for an series match in the UK of more than 60,000.
Outstanding Performance from Reece Walsh
Guided by an outstanding display in attack and defence from club star Reece Walsh, the Kangaroos were deserving and convincing victors in the first match of the three-match series, meaning the hosts must win at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium next Saturday to sustain their hopes of a series victory since the 1970s.
England will have to be much better with the ball if they are to achieve that. On several instances in the first half, the home team found themselves in promising positions but they were failed to score for any tries. That was in large measure thanks to Walsh, who executed two superb interceptions.
Key Moments of the Game
The first came as Farnworth seemed certain to put Dom Young in for what would have been the first score, then the fullback denied Lewis as half-time approached. By then, the Australians had gone ahead as Reece Walsh himself finished a wonderful move.
Cleary added the extras before kicking a penalty on the stroke of the interval to establish a two-score lead. It was a pivotal point, as was the score for Crichton shortly after the restart which made it fourteen to nil in favour of the visitors. The hosts now had to score three times and that seemed to halt their drive.
If there were any doubt about the victors, they were decisively settled with 15 minutes to go. Cameron Munster’s half-break was supported by Angus Crichton, who pushed past Welsby for Australia’s third try.
That made it 20-0 and there was further humiliation in the closing stages as Reece Walsh finished another breathtaking attack, exploiting a tired and clearly exhausted English defense for his second try.
Final Score and Looking Ahead
By then, local supporters had begun to filter out and many missed Daryl Clark’s consolation, which at least prevented England finishing scoreless. However, there are many issues for the coach to answer going into what is now a must-win Test next weekend.
