Plans for Putin-Trump Meeting Shelved Days After Budapest Talks Suggested

There are "no plans" for US President President Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has stated.

Recently the US president said he and the Russian president would meet in Hungary's capital within two weeks to examine the war in Ukraine.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "productive" call and that a face-to-face session was not "required".

The administration did not share any more details on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Background Context

Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting during a call with Putin, a day before meeting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts suggested his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar indicating Trump had pressured him to cede large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.

However, on Monday Trump endorsed a peace initiative supported by Kyiv and EU officials to freeze the hostilities on the present positions.

"Leave it as is where it stands," he stated.

Russia has frequently resisted against freezing the existing front lines.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "enduring stability", Lavrov stated on Tuesday, suggesting that pausing conflict would only amount to a brief pause.

Negotiating Stances

The "underlying reasons" of the conflict demanded attention, the Russian diplomat said, using Kremlin shorthand for a set of comprehensive conditions that encompass the acceptance of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its European partners.

Zelensky stated conversations concerning the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to evade negotiations.

He also said the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

Putin's unplanned conversation with Trump recently came ahead of speculation that the US was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target inside Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in negotiations", he added.
