New York's next mayor confirms his intention to reside in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate during his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors after the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central platform, was not quick to announce he would live there right away after his electoral win in November.
"This decision rested on the security of my family and the need to dedicating my full attention on implementing the affordability agenda voters supported," Mamdani said on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district famous for its diverse cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.
"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, it will always live inside me and my work," he added.
Political Debate
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
Yet his critics, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the affordable housing despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.
A House Not Always Used
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a space for civic gatherings, and championed significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings very different than his modest Astoria digs.
Adorned in butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.
Internally, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated consistent with the home's historical period.
The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, meaning the city sets limits on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than the means of many residents.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
