Los Angeles Battles Unprecedented High Temperatures Just Days After Severe Winter Weather.
In the wake of heavy downpours that caused flooding across sections of the city, LA is now seeing unseasonably hot temperatures for this time of year.
Record-Setting Readings
During the day Friday, the temperature soared to 91°F (33°C) in the city center, as reported by meteorologists. This exceeds the previous daily record for this date, which was 88°F (31°C) and was recorded in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were noted on NWS charts for the region.
Safety Alerts
The weather service cautioned that Friday's heat posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for those at risk. Their recommendations included:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave kids or animals unattended in a hot car.
A Sharp Weather Swing
This sudden spike in heat arrives just after a powerful winter storm that pummeled the area recently. That system brought high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to the mountains, triggering mudslide risks for millions residents.
Tragically, the storm also caused a massive avalanche in the Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Temperatures Easing
The outlook suggests a cooldown is expected. Temperatures were predicted to decrease to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown LA by overnight.
Other locales that experienced ninety degrees included Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Meanwhile, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were expected to reach the high eighties.
In the coming days, downtown LA can expect temperatures in the eighties, with a further cooldown expected for the week ahead.
