Our team is checking video footage and photographs circulated this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to verify the site from which the pictures were from relied on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.

Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
