Israelis observe two-year anniversary of October 7th incident as Palestinian ceasefire talks continue
People have come together across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The attack resulted in in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are considered accurate by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our violent adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will not create a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The national leadership postponed state commemorations until 16 October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held around the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the affected families, it was televised throughout Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was observed throughout the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to examine the conditions of the plan.
A high-ranking delegate involved in the negotiations said that an evening round of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.
The source stated the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, because of disagreements over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He noted that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet deliver any significant progress," but mentioned that facilitators are working hard to close the gaps between the two sides.
Key Points in Talks
- An enduring ceasefire
- The trade of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies deliveries
- After-conflict governance of the region
Citizen Reaction
In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother lived through the incident on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place feels like home now and until all the hostages return none of us will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everybody home returned, we can relax once more. Then we can start to recover," she concluded.
Outside the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their support for the families of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight remain in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.
Demonstrator a participant stated: "We must do every compromise required for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be protected."
Research now consistently show that approximately seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the conflict to finish in exchange for the liberation of the abducted.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the location of Nova festival, grieving people gathered to honor the dead.
From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers indicated the heavy Israeli shelling continued.
In the main city, attacks were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the west side district, sector and zone areas and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"When the evening arrives, the dread appears with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, embracing, particularly my youngest child who puts his head on me all night."
"Continuously we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the war will resume to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had taken in the remains of six people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of Khan Younis said additional dead people had been transported. An individual was killed by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get aid to the southern area, medics reported.
