Witness testimonies surfaced of several detonations and the sound of low-altitude aircraft in the Venezuelan capital in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday morning. This situation has led to accusations from the Venezuelan authorities and requests for international intervention.
Caracas Accuses Washington of Military Action
Venezuela's socialist government has accused the Washington of committing "foreign aggression," stating that ex- President Donald Trump allegedly authorized military strikes against the South American country. In an public declaration, the government stated that attacks had targeted Caracas and three other states: Miranda state, La Guaira, and Aragua state.
"The sole aim of this aggression is to seize control of our nation's natural resources, in particular its oil and mineral wealth," the government said.
The government appealed to the global community to censure the actions, which it described a "blatant breach of global law" that endangered millions of lives in peril.
Reports of Explosions and Military Sites Hit
Locals reported hearing roughly seven detonations around the middle of the night local time. Citizens in different areas allegedly hurried into the open.
"The earth trembled. This is frightening. We experienced explosions and jets in the distance," commented one resident.
Smoke was seen rising from two military installations in Caracas: the La Carlota airbase airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna army base, where leader Nicolás Maduro is reported to reside.
International Condemnation
The president of neighboring Colombia, claimed on X that "Currently they are attacking Caracas... bombing it with rockets." He called for an urgent emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.
The Colombian government, which recently joined the Security Council, announced it would activate defense plans at its frontier with its neighbor.
Background
These alleged strikes are preceded by a extended campaign of pressure by the United States against the Venezuelan administration. Beginning in last summer, there has been a major American military deployment off Venezuela's Caribbean coast and a number of strikes on ships accused of illegal activities.
Venezuela's administration has declared "the implementation of external disturbance" and commanded all national defense measures to be activated. It has also called on its citizens to protest and "denounce this imperialist aggression."
US authorities and the Defense Department did not promptly addressed requests for a statement regarding the reports.
