American actor and playwright Jeremy O Harris, renowned for the Tony-nominated production Slave Play, was taken into custody last month at an international terminal in Japan on suspicion of attempting to smuggle controlled substances into the country, officials announced.

Harris, 36, was intercepted on 16 November at Naha airport, located on Okinawa, after a border inspection agent found 0.78 grams of a crystalline substance containing the synthetic narcotic MDMA in his personal bag, according to a official statement.

He was immediately arrested on suspicion of breaching Japan’s stringent Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.

Local customs officials lodged a formal complaint with the prosecutor’s office to initiate formal charging proceedings against the playwright.

A law enforcement representative in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, verified that Harris remains in custody. The official did not elaborate on whether Harris has admitted to the charges.
