The deceased of a mother aged 34 and her 10-year-old daughter have been discovered inside freezers in an residence in the western part of Austria.

The deceased, a woman from Syria and her daughter, who had been missing for several months, were detected on Friday. The freezers were hidden behind a plasterboard wall in the flat, located in the Innsbruck area.

A pair of males, a 55-year-old Austrian and his brother aged 53, were taken into custody in June. The older man, a colleague of the Syrian woman, told law enforcement last week that there had been an accident—but rejected intentional killing.

Addressing journalists previously, a official for the state prosecutor said the pair were being kept in custody on "strong suspicion of intentional killing".

Personal details of those implicated have not been disclosed by law enforcement, in following local legislation.

Their going missing was initially flagged by the cousin of the mother, who lives in Germany, on July 25, 2024.

Police stated the 55-year-old suspect informed them at the time she had gone on an long journey with her child to see her family in the nation of Turkey.

The mother's debit card was then noted as being active abroad repeatedly.

However when officers searched the mother's apartment, her mobile phone was discovered.

An individual also claimed listening to a loud noise in the flat, and cries of "mother" on the occasion the two were believed to have vanished.

A wider official inquiry was initiated, with officers finding multiple communications sent from the mother's device—such as a resignation letter to her company and communications to the male colleague.

Officials confirmed a four-figure sum was also transferred to the man.

The head of the State Criminal Police Office informed the press on Tuesday that a rented space had been leased before the vanishing and a freezer had been placed there.

The two suspects extracted the appliance from the unit on the date the woman and her child went missing, the official revealed. And a seven days after, they acquired a second unit.

Investigators believe they consider this points to the deaths were planned in advance.

"How they died was not identifiable due to the advanced decay of the remains," she commented.

The prosecutor's spokesman—representing the state—stated the precise timeline is yet to be determined, but the bodies were expertly concealed and went unnoticed during a prior examination.

While the suspects were detained in June, it was only on November 12 that the 55-year-old admitted to an incident and to storing the victims. He denies any intent to kill, investigators said.

In a related development, his 53-year-old sibling acknowledged a cover-up but rejected awareness of a murder.

The two suspects are at this time in custody awaiting trial in detention centers in separate locations, situated at a distance.

Via a shared communication, Austria's Minister for Women and the top legal representative said the "suspected killing of two... represents the abrupt and violent termination of two human lives and exposes a heartless setup".

"Women and girls are being killed due to the simple reality that they are women and girls," they continued.

"Femicides are a strongly established and widespread concern that we must fight resolutely."
