Anthony Barry Explains His Approach: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

Ten years back, the England assistant coach featured for Accrington Stanley. Now, his attention is fixed to assist the head coach claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. The road from athlete to trainer began through volunteering with the youth team. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he was hooked. He discovered his calling.

Staggering Ascent

His advancement stands out. Starting as Paul Cook’s assistant, he built a standing with creative training and strong interpersonal abilities. His stints with teams took him to elite sides, and he held international positions across multiple countries. His players include legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, he's fully immersed, the peak as he describes it.

“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big and then you plan: ‘What's the process, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We have to build a systematic approach enabling us to maximize our opportunities.”

Obsession with Details

Dedication, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Working every hour under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, he and Tuchel challenge limits. Their strategies feature player analysis, a strategy for high temperatures ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights “Team England” and avoids language including "pause".

“It's not time off or a rest,” Barry notes. “We had to build something that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that going back is a relief.”

Ambitious Trainers

The assistant coach says and the head coach as highly ambitious. “Our goal is to master each element of play,” Barry affirms. “We strive to own the entire field and that's our focus most of our time to. Our responsibility not just to keep up of changes but to beat them and innovate. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We get 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We have to play a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It’s to take it from thought to data to knowledge to execution.

“To develop a process that allows us to be productive in that window, we have to use all the time available after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, it's vital to develop bonds among them. We have to spend time communicating regularly, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we limit ourselves to that time, we have no chance.”

Final Qualifiers

Barry is preparing for the final pair in the qualifying campaign – facing Serbia at home and away to Albania. They've already ensured qualification after six consecutive victories and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; on the contrary. Now is the moment to build on the team's style, for further momentum.

“We are both certain that our playing approach ought to embody everything that is good from the top division,” Barry says. “The physicality, the adaptability, the robustness, the work ethic. The national team shirt should be harder than ever to get yet easy to carry. It ought to be like a superhero's cape instead of heavy armour.

“To make it light, we need to provide a system that lets them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and focus more on action.

“You can gain psychological edges available to trainers in attack and defense – building from the defense, pressing from the front. However, in midfield on the field, that section, we believe play has stagnated, especially in England's top flight. Everybody has so much information these days. They can organize – defensive shapes. We are really trying to speed up play across those 24 metres.”

Thirst for Improvement

Barry’s hunger for improvement is all-consuming. During his education for the top coaching badge, he was worried over the speaking requirement, especially as his class included stars including former players. For self-improvement, he entered tough situations available to him to practise giving them. One was HMP Walton locally, and he trained detainees for a training session.

Barry graduated with top honors, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied 16,154 throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard was among those won over and he recruited the coach as part of his backroom at Chelsea. When Frank was fired, it spoke volumes that the club got rid of nearly all assistants while keeping Barry.

His replacement with the club took over, and, four months later, they secured European glory. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry remained with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he got Barry out of Chelsea to work together again. English football's governing body consider them a duo like previous management pairs.
