An Account of Surprising Generosity: The Time a University Student Let Me Stay on Her Dorm Ground

Back in 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I assumed to arrange lodging when I arrived, yet upon reaching the city, a major event was in town and all the youth hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I thought maybe I could just sleep at the airport – but soon learned Canberra airport, not like the one back home, does not operate around the clock. With no idea quite what to do and growing worried, I caught public transport and began walking in the direction of a gaming venue, thinking it was a place to spend those hours in a place that was open 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape to succeed at a crucial interview the next day, yet, as a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.

The world needs more individuals like that woman.

Apparently, I appeared out of place since a woman spotted me walking aimlessly through downtown and inquired if everything was alright. I recounted my predicament and immediately she offered I could crash on the ground at her university residence at ANU – a perfect solution, considering that was where the important interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering a meal: a leftover stuffed baguettes she had taken home her part-time job. I was able to use a hot shower and a secure location and secure to sleep.

With hindsight, I now understand the significant risk she undertook as a woman inviting a male stranger who was a complete stranger stay in her room. Back then I operated under a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious about things like that. As a dad now, it astounds me she offered that help – but still incredibly thankful.

Ultimately, I did not study at that university, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of generosity. My sincere desire is that karma has returned her generosity abundantly. We could all use more individuals with such compassion.
